The world’s top tennis player Novak Djokovic has been awarded Serbia’s top honour.

Djokovic was awarded the Karadjordje’s Star medal for his promotion of Serbia, President Boris Tadic’s office said.

“He is Serbia’s best ambassador to the world,” Tadic said on his website.

The honour comes on Serbian Statehood Day, which falls on Wednesday.

Firmly seated atop the ATP rankings, Djokovic has become the undisputed national hero after leading his country to its first-ever Davis Cup title in 2010 and winning four of the last five Grand Slam tournaments.

The medal will be handed to Djokovic at a ceremony to be held on Wednesday in the Serbian parliament.
