Aussies everywhere at the Australian Open

It will be a case of Aussies all over the place on day one of the Australian Open.

Thirteen of the 18 locals involved in singles action – the most since 2005 – will be scattered all over Melbourne Park.

Rising superstar Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic get their shows underway on the big arenas, while the likes of Jordan Thompson and Luke Saville will be off-Broadway on the backcourts.

Kyrgios – who shot to fame last year with his thrilling run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, where his scalps included Rafael Nadal – admits he will be at less than 100 per cent fitness due to a lingering back injury.

But it was never going to keep him out of his home grand slam and a first-round clash with Argentina’s Federico Delbonis.

“I love the atmosphere here,” said Kyrgios.

“The crowd’s obviously really behind you and I love that part of it.

“Just looking at it, I’m 19, this is my last grand slam as a teenager and I’m going to embrace that.”

Tomic – still only 22 himself and Kyrgios’s predecessor as the great Australian hope – has made a solid start to 2015, with quarter-final appearances in Brisbane and Sydney.

He will also start as favourite in his first-round clash against German Tobias Kamke.

Youngster Thanasi Kokkinakis looks to have the toughest first-round assignment of the Australians, having been drawn to play 11th seed Ernests Gulbis.

But the Latvian has had a problematic start to 2015, pulling out of his planned season opener in Qatar due to illness and then losing in Auckland last week to qualifier Jiri Vesely.

In women’s action, Jarmila Gajdosova has a great chance to snap a decade-long singles duck at Melbourne Park when she takes on Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru.
