Aussie junior wins US Open tennis final

Australian teenage tennis discovery Omar Jasika has warmed up for his US Open boys’ final with victory in the junior doubles decider.

Jasika teamed up with Japanese partner Naoki Nakagawa to beat Brazilians Joao Menezes and Rafael Matos 6-3 7-6 (8-6), saving three set points in the tiebreaker before clinching the title.

The victory came just a few hours after unseeded Jasika defeated German Jan Choinski in his singles semi-final. on Saturday.

The 17-year-old from Melbourne was leading 6-3 4-1 when Choinski retired in the brutal heat and humidity at Flushing Meadows.

Jasiki is now hoping to join celebrated countrymen Pat Cash (1982) and Bernard Tomic (2009) as a junior champion in New York when he plays French fifth seed Quentin Hayls in the final on Sunday (Monday AEST).

If he wins, he will be Australia’s sixth junior grand slam champion in the past seven years.

He will also match the rare feat of landing both the singles and doubles crowns, something Nick Kyrgios achieved at the 2013 Australian Open.
