Alize Cornet wins Hobart International

France’s Alize Cornet has ended Eugenie Bouchard’s perfect week with a straight sets win in the final of the Hobart International.

Cornet delivered a polished performance on Saturday, thrashing Bouchard 6-1 6-2 to take her fifth WTA Tour title and first since winning in Poland, in April 2014, at her third attempt in Hobart.

The 25-year-old sailed through the 31-minute first set during which Bouchard failed to hold serve.

The Canadian became increasingly frustrated in breezy conditions and threw her hands in the air toward her coaching team.

At times the crowd-favourite was listless on court, appearing completely despondent.

“It was a tough one for me,” Bouchard said after the match.

“I just wasn’t on top of my game.”

Bouchard’s match stats included five double faults.

Her Hobart campaign has been strong and included a win over 2014 Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova in the semi-finals as Bouchard continued on her comeback from a concussion suffered during a fall in the change rooms during the 2015 US Open.

Cornet’s path to the Hobart final included a semi-final walkover after opponent Mona Barthel withdrew with a lower back complaint.

“It’s good for me,” Cornet said of the result.

“I really hope I’m going to be in the same shape for the Australian Open.”

The world No.42 has drawn Bojana Jovanovski, 40 places lower in ranking, for her first round at the first grand slam of the year.
