West Ham vs Southampton 2014 EPL Round 3 preview, tips and teams

Sam Allardyce’s West Ham United welcome Southampton to Upton Park later today in a game that sees West Ham without five players due to injury. Southampton have a full squad to call upon, less the injured Jay Rodriguez, with Lloyd Isgrove also a doubt having only played half an hour against Millwall last week in the Capital One Cup.

Southampton look convincing outfit at the moment having beaten Millwall in the Capital One Cup and running a strong Liverpool side to the wire in their opening game of the campaign, before West Brom held them to a lucky but hardfought draw. West Ham for their part were dumped out of the Capital One Cup in that most undignified manner- a penalty shootout in which they suffered defeat at the hands of Sheffield United.

Southampton are likely to call upon the services of striker Graziano Pelle, who scored against Millwall and will hope that he can end their striking malaise against West Ham, an opponent past whom they have only scored once in their last five Premier league meetings. West Ham look strong at home, having let in only eight goals over nine home games in the Premier league.

Southampton however, are a rejuvenated side, even without Rickie Lambert who was sold to Liverpool along with Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren, having spent wisely during this transfer window. The odds are tipped slightly in Southampton’s favour given current form this season, however over their last five Premier league away games they have only won one, drawing one and losing three.

This record however is likely to be put to the sword after a heavy recruitment spree and reshaping of the squad. Today’s game is likely to finish on Southampton’s favour with a predicted scoreline of 2-0.
