Punter bets $50,000 Socceroos wont make it past 2014 World Cup group stage

Australia’s performance against Ecuador this week has convinced one punter that the Socceroos won’t be making much of an impact at June’s World Cup.

Sportingbet.com.au has taken a bet of $50,000 at odds of $1.09 that the Socceroos will be eliminated in the group stage. Since the market opened in June last year, the odds of Australia not making it past the group stage have firmed from $1.50 into $1.06.

“This bet represents the overwhelming consensus of our punters. More than 98% of the money we’re holding in this market is for the Socceroos to have only a short stay in Brazil,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
Australia is $6 to beat Chile ($1.55), $8 to beat Holland ($1.33) and $12 to beat Spain ($1.25) in their group games.

Tim Cahill has firmed from $3 into $2.80 to be Australia’s top World Cup goalscorer after his two-goal performance against Ecuador.
