In this evening’s team news, Robin Van Persie is expected to skip the game following reports that he is suffering with a minor stomach bug or complaint. On a more positive note for the Netherlands, Nigel De Jong is expected to make a return after successfully recovering from a groin injury that was supposed to have effectively ended his tournament. Ron Vlaar and Leroy Fer are back in training too, but Robin Van Persie is in isolated training, with Louis Van Gaal explaining: “Robin van Persie has an intestinal problem and I didn’t want to take a risk,” said Van Gaal. “He is a very important player for us.”In principle, my captains always play, but only if they’re 100%.”

In the Argentine camp, Angel Di Maria is out of this game due to a thigh problem but according to team physios he will be ready for Sunday should the Argentines defeat the Netherlands this evening. Sergio Aguero is now available after getting over a thigh issue, with Marcos Rojo also returning for selection after seeing out a one game ban.
Argentina are in high spirits, even given the fact that Germany crippled this years hosts, and the greatest international football squad to ever grace a stadium – Brazil. The reason for their jubilance is not clear, although it could stem from the fact that they have in their midst a striker who many consider the finest forward in the world game, one Lionel Messi. Marc Wilmots tried to dismiss Argentina, saying they “Looked ordinary”, however any team in the world would be lucky to have Messi, and most people with any sense would never deign to call such a team “ordinary”. There is no doubt that Messi wants this World Cup, that conclusion drawn from the mouthwatering display he gave during his side’s quarter final victory over the Belgians. His commitment was clearly there for all to see, and should the rest of the squad suddenly “switch on” and realise how far they have already come without actually reaching the peak of their powers, we may be in for a real treat, given that Argentina boasts some of the finest attacking talent in the world. In Messi, coach Alejandro Sabella believes they have a man capable of winning this tournament singlehandedly, enthusing: “He was our water in the desert against Belgium. When the terrain was dry, he once again gave us a chance to breathe fresh air.”
High praise indeed, but will this footballing messiah be able to stave off the attentions of a team who have already embarrassed current World Champions Spain by mauling them 5-1? Hopefully the rest of the Argentine squad will show the same kind of awareness and urgency that Messi has and realise that there is only one game to go before the most important game of their lives.
