Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish says striker Darren Bent has injured his ankle and will miss England’s friendly international against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Bent was carried off on a stretcher in the second half of Villa’s 0-0 draw at Wigan in the Premier League on Saturday after landing awkwardly following a tackle.

McLeish says “he was in agony in the dressing room. He is certainly out of the England squad.”

Interim England coach Stuart Pearce has four other strikers – Fraizer Campbell, Daniel Sturridge, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck – in his squad for the friendly at Wembley Stadium.
