Germany will hope they can at least reproduce that score line on Saturday after their 4-0 demolition of Portugal in their debut match of the 2014 World Cup. Led in attack by Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller, the Germans ran riot against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal with Muller grabbing a hattrick. However, Joachim Leow knows that the big score line could amount to nothing if they fail to get a result against Ghana. Back home, expectations are not very high about this German team as they have reached the semi finals on the last two occasions and played in the 2002 finals but have not won the World Cup since 1990. Four years ago, the Germans started with a 4-0 rout of Australia before losing 1-0 to Serbia. The 1-0 win against Ghana in their final group match ensured that they topped the group and stormed to the semi finals, dumping out both England and Argentina before losing 1-0 to eventual winners Spain.

Ghana, on their part, go into this game knowing that a loss here will in all likelihood, send them packing. The African powerhouse lost 2-1 to the United States of America in their opening match. Four years ago, Ghana reached the quarter finals in South Africa, becoming only the third African nation to do so and could have gone on to the semi finals, only for Luis Suarez to block a goal- bound shot with his hand in the dying minutes of extra time. Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent penalty and Uruguay knocked the Black Stars out in the ensuing penalty shootout.

TEAM NEWS

Germany coach Joachim Leow is expected to stick to his formation which does not utilize a true striker and Thomas Muller, who scored a hattrick against Portugal, will continue in the false nine role. Centre back Mats Hummels suffered a thigh bruise in that match but should be fit to play while Team Captain Phillip Lahm is also expected to continue in a holding midfield role. For Ghana, AC Milan midfielder Michael Essien is back in training after picking up a toe injury in the defeat to the United States but it remains to be seen if he will start the game. Schalke 04 midfielder Kevin- Prince Boateng started on the bench last time out but could feature from the start here as Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is expected to go back to his favoured 4-3-3 formation.

Probable Lineups

Germany (4-3-3): Neuer; Howedes, Hummels, Mertesacker, Boateng; Khedira, Lahm, Kroos;

Ozil, Gotze, Muller

Ghana (4-3-3): Kwaserey; K. Asamoah, Boye, Mensah, Opare; Rabiu, Muntari, Atsu; A. Ayew,

Boateng, Gyan

PREDICTION

Expect an interesting match as the Germans will look to dictate play as their front three continually interchange positions, making it hard for them to man-mark. The Africans will put up some resistance but the quality of the German team will eventually shine through.
