Germany vs Algeria tips, preview, odds, teams and betting – Soccer, Football FIFA World Cup 2014

On paper, this should be a no contest as three-time World Champions Germany face Algeria who have made it past the group stage of the World Cup for only the first time in their history. However, if you add in the element of revenge, this might turn out to be one of the most emotionally charged matches of this World Cup.

Way back in 1982, Germany and Austria played out what went down in history as the ‘Disgrace of Gijon” to eliminate Algeria from the World Cup. It was the last game of the first round with Algeria and Chile having played the day before. With the outcome of that match already decided, a win by one or two goals for West Germany would result in both them and Austria advancing at the expense of Algeria. After 10 minutes, West Germany took the lead and both teams proceeded to kick the ball about aimlessly till the end of the match. After that farce, FIFA revised the group system so that the final two games in each group would be played simultaneously.

This time around however, Germany had little trouble qualifying from the so-called ‘Group of Death’, going unbeaten in all three group games. After the 4-0 demolition of Portugal in their opening match, the Germans drew 2-2 against Ghana before rounding up with a 1-0 win over Ghana. Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller is in great scoring form with four goals in the group stage, level with Lionel Messi and Brazil’s Neymar.

Algeria qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in their history with one win and one draw after the opening match loss to dark horses Belgium. The 4-2 win against South Korea in their second game showed the attacking flair of the North African nation before they came back from a goal down to earn the draw they needed to go through to the Round of 16.

TEAM NEWS

With Bastian Schweinsteiger now approaching match fitness, he is likely to be in Joachim Leow’s starting XI on Monday at the expense of Sami Khedira. In attack, Bayern Munich youngster Mario Gotze could replace Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski while top scorer Thomas Muller would continue to lead the line with Miroslav Klose having to settle for a place on the bench once more.

Algeria coach Vahid Halihodzic does not have any fresh injury or suspension worries and should line his team up as he did in their final group match against Russia. The attack will be lead by Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani, supported by Valencia’s Sofiane Feghouli and Granada attacker Yasine Brahimi.

Probable Lineups

Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Howedes, Hummels, Metersacker, Boateng; Lahm, Schweinsteiger; Kroos; Ozil, Muller, Gotze

Algeria (4-2-3-1): M’Bolhi; Mesbah, Halliche, Belkalem, Mandi; Bentaleb, Medjani; Djabou, Brahimi, Feghouli; Slimani

PREDICTION

The Algerians will give it all they’ve got and will play passionately but Germany have too much quality in every department of the team and should eventually win this comfortably.
