Business as usual for Phoenix in A-League

Wellington Phoenix say it’s business as usual as they wait for confirmation that their A-League match against bottom-of-the-table Gold Coast United will go ahead on Sunday.

Football Federation Australia on Wednesday terminated the A-League licence held by Gold Coast owner Clive Palmer over his “flagrant disregard” of the competition’s rules.

FFA chairman Frank Lowy has said he wants United to play out their last four rounds of the season, but whether the fixture against the Phoenix will go ahead as scheduled or be postponed remains up in the air.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is taking the approach that it will.

“Our intention is that the league will continue as normal and we look forward to hosting Gold Coast on Sunday,” he said on Thursday.

“It has to be business as usual so far as training and associated matters are concerned because this is out of our control.”

Herbert is also coach of the All Whites, and he took an early-morning flight back to Wellington after New Zealand’s 3-2 defeat in a friendly against Jamaica in Auckland on Wednesday night.

He said the five Phoenix players involved in the international would be back at club training on Friday.

With the Phoenix having won five of their past seven games, Herbert is keen to maintain the momentum.

“Another reason we want the game played on schedule is that we have a pretty tough run in and it wouldn’t help if we had to fit this fixture in later on,” he said.

“But if that is what we have to do, then we will just get on with it.”
