Hosts Brazil struggled somewhat in the 2-1 victory over Colombia last time out and their task here will be made a lot more difficult by the absence of superstar forward Neymar who has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a fractured bone in his back. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will now need to rely on the other forwards at his disposal of which none has impressed so far in the tournament. Chelsea midfielder Oscar had a good game in the opening match but has failed to build on that while the likes of Hulk and Fred continue to underwhelm. Brazil remain unbeaten after taking seven points from their group stage matches and defeating Chile on penalties (1-1 after extra time) before the Colombia win. They now take on European opposition for the first time since their controversial curtain raiser against Croatia which ended 3-1. This is the first time Brazil are making the World Cup semi final since 2002 and the Selacao fans will hope their team can replicate the performance of Ronaldo and co against Germany in the final of that tournament 12 years ago.

Germany were their usual efficient selves in their quarter final match against France as they ran out 1-0 winners over their fellow Europeans. The Germans, who are meeting South American opposition for the first time in this tournament, started the tournament with a 4-0 thrashing of Portugal but haven’t been convincing since then despite topping their group. They needed extra time to edge past Algeria in the Round of 16 (0-0 after 90 minutes) and then beat France thanks to an early header by Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels. This will the fourth consecutive appearance in the semi finals for Die Mannschaft and Coach Joachim Leow will hope his boys do better than the last two squads that lost1-0 to Spain and 2-0 to Italy at this stage in 2006 and 2010 respectively.

TEAM NEWS

With Neymar ruled out of the rest of the World Cup and PSG defender Thiago Silva suspended, Brazil will be missing two of their best players in this match and it remains to be seen how Scolari intends to replace them, especially the former. Neymar has been almost unplayable and has four goals to his name while Silva has been the defensive lynchpin of the side.

Germany will probably play Phillip Lahm in his natural fullback position like they did against France with Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger playing in midfield. Lazio striker Miroslav Klose could start upfront again with Thomas Muller and Mesut Ozil either side of him.

Probable Lineups

Brazil (4-3-3): Cesar; Marcelo, Luiz, Dante, Alves; Gustavo, Fernandinho, Oscar; Willian, Fred, Hulk

Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Lahm, Howedes, Hummels, Boateng; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Ozil, Klose, Muller

PREDICTION

Neymar has been the reason Brazil have come this far and I believe that in his absence, the hosts will have no chance against the efficient German machine. The loss of Thiago Silve will also hit them hard and the Selacao defense will struggle to cope with the German attack.
