Brazil vs Colombia live scores, odds, results, teams – Soccer, Football FIFA World Cup 2014

One of the most interesting and what promises to be on of the most fiercely contested games of the tournament kicks off tonight at the Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza as Los Cafeteros of Colombia take on the proud Golden Selection of Brazil. Team news and Brazil’s Neymar has overcome blows to the knee and thigh sustained in a tough tackling game against Chile to be fit for this evening’s encounter. Luis Gustavo of Brazil’s midfield must serve out a ban this evening, meaning that Luiz Felipe Scolari may call on the services of Paulinho in his stead. Jose Pekerman has been blessed with a full squad for selection this evening, with no injuries or niggles to report. Pekerman is expecting a busy midfield this evening and may have to drop a forward in Jackson Martinez to add a midfielder and prevent the Selecao from overrunning the middle of the park.

Los Cafeteros are in a buoyant mood, stating confidently that “there is no pressure” with their team reaching their first ever World Cup quarter finals. It’s a different story for Brazil however, who are carrying the burden of playing hosts this year (a role which always carries expectations) as well as the weight of history on their shoulders, their nation being the most decorated World Cup team in history with five stars emblazoned proudly on their jerseys. The current Selecao seem to be of a different mould to older generations of the same team however, with 1970 Brazil Captain Carlos Alberto stating rather aggressively, “The team is crying too much. They are crying when they’re singing the national anthem, crying when they get hurt, crying when they shoot penalties. Come on, stop crying! Enough is enough!” It seems to be an after-effect of massive pressure on the squad, who are carrying a lot of stress owing to the amount of expectation placed upon them, and coach Scolari has wasted no time in ordering sports psychologist Regina Brandao to speak to the squad to try and alleviate the burden.
Brazil will need to up their game against Los Cafeteros who have looked in imperious form while reaching the last eight of a tournament full of surprises and giant killings. Colombia coach Jose Pekerman is not taking anything for granted however, stating: “Sometimes a team with a lot of potential, if they don’t find the result and they need to win, they can’t play so brilliantly. So the competition becomes interesting because a team with less individual stars can disturb the balance of the other team.” Colombia as a team may never have been so far in this particular tournament, however Pekerman has a previous Quarter-final finish on his CV after taking Argentina to the last eight in Germany 2006. They were unfortunate to lose on penalties to the hosts while Pekerman suffered a caustic attack by the Argentine media after subbing their main playmaker Riquelme while they had a 1-0 lead, a move which his country’s media described as “suicide”. South American games are always fierce, and tonight will be no different as Los Cafeteros look to do the unthinkable and make the hosts cry for the last time in this tournament.
