Waratahs want to make scrum a weapon

NSW Waratahs plan on turning their already respected scrum into a genuine weapon, as they look for improvement in their quest for back-to-back Super Rugby titles.

The Tahs boast four Wallabies front rowers in props Benn Robinson, Sekope Kepu and Paddy Ryan and hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau.

While the scrum provided a stable platform for their gifted and penetrating backs in 2014, Ryan believes it can be more of a weapon in it’s own right.

“Our scrum was solid last year, not dominant, and it certainly didn’t feel like a weapon that we could use when we heeded it,” Ryan told AAP, at the Waratahs’ season launch in Sydney on Wednesday.

“That’s something that a few other teams around the Australian conference have done over the last couple of years.

“The Brumbies and the Force have done it alright, so I think we want to be able to use it as a weapon.

“It’s a great way to get a penalty, kick the ball out and then you get the ball back.

“I think any situation we can put our backline on the front foot is a good one for us.

“They are a great backline to unleash.”

Ryan, who has won three Test caps said the Waratahs were also benefiting from the scrum expertise of former Argentina Test hooker Mario Ledesma, who won 84 caps and was part of the Pumas side that reached the 2007 World Cup semi-finals.
