Wallaby Toomua looks to stretch England

Recalled back Matt Toomua has declared the Wallabies intend to threaten England all over the field and stretch them out wide in Saturday’s third rugby Test, instead of bashing their way through the middle.

Toomua’s inclusion at inside centre in place of the hard running Samu Kerevi gives coach Michael Cheika another playmaker alongside five-eighth Bernard Foley.

The Wallabies couldn’t convert a massive possession advantage into multiple tries in last week’s second Test loss.

Toomua said he hoped to add balance to the backline and bring the Wallabies’ outside backs into the game.

The Brumbies back said for Australia to score more tries than they did last week they need to be smart about how and where they attack and he viewed that as a big part of his job.

“We had so much ball and they stopped us from scoring, so for us it’s about changing that attack up a bit and playing with a bit more width and stretching them a lot more,” Toomua said.

“We need to be able to threaten them all over the park and not just up the middle.”

Asked if Australia had a Plan B if their running game didn’t work Toomua quipped “a kicking game?

“No, it’s about sticking to it and persistence. A running game in the first 20 minutes is probably going to be that hard because everyone is fresh, but it’s about sticking to it, knowing our systems.”

Toomua has had the benefit of playing and training alongside Foley before.

He would be happy to see fullback Israel Folau running alongside him in the centres, where he has spent some time this season.

“I think anyone would like him outside because he probably provides you with a bit of space, because I’d be throwing three guys at him as well,” Toomua said.

“The only thing about Israel is you can’t clone him. We’d love to have him everywhere. The more we can get him the ball the better.”

Toomua insisted the Wallabies definitely didn’t view Saturday’s game as a dead rubber and were focused on restoring pride after back-to back losses.
