Wallabies a step closer to clean sweep

The Wallabies have arrived in Paris with a rare European clean sweep in the back of their minds after maintaining a perfect start under Michael Cheika against Wales.

A week after holding off a fast-finishing Barbarians outfit in London, Australia fought back late to notch a 10th straight victory over Wales, winning 33-28 in Cheika’s first Test match in charge on Saturday.

The Wallabies are clearly a work in progress under their new coach but continued improvement would give them a genuine shot at becoming the first Australia side to win all four Tests on a spring tour in almost 20 years.

Not since 1996 under the late Greg Smith has the feat been achieved and the Wallabies aren’t shying away from their ambition to end a turbulent year on a high.

“That (a clean sweep) is the goal obviously but going forward our focus is just on France now,” star fullback Israel Folau said.

“We just have to take it one week at a time but the boys are building nicely.”

A shut-out bid could come down to the final match of the tour, a blockbuster against England at Twickenham on November 29, though the Wallabies first must overcome France and Ireland sides buoyed by impressive wins on the weekend.

France ended a four-match losing streak by routing Fiji 40-15 on Saturday, with winger Teddy Thomas scoring a hat-trick of tries on debut.

Australia had three successive wins over the French on home soil in June but facing them at Stade de France is a completely different proposition, as evidenced by their most recent visit in 2012 that ended in a 33-6 defeat.

Next week’s assignment against Ireland in Dublin has also suddenly becoming more daunting after an under-strength Irish side produced a remarkable 29-15 win over South Africa.

Cheika has sidestepped talk of results so far, saying his desire to win is a given and his focus is more on getting the Wallabies to continue to embrace a new style he hopes will bring better consistency,

“There’s plenty to improve on. We’re not claiming that we had a cracker (against Wales) or anything like that,” said Cheika, who met with Sydney Roosters NRL coach Trent Robinson on Australia’s final night in Cardiff.

“We’ve had two weeks together or playing a new system and guys are getting into that.

“Trust comes when you do it more and more often, so what we’re hoping is on this trip we can build that while at the same time playing good enough rugby to grab a win here or there.”
