Walker misses Australia’s Sevens squad

Former Gold Coast Titans flyer Shannon Walker has lost his race against time to be fit for Australia’s Rugby Sevens series opener on the Gold Coast this weekend.

Walker is overcoming a leg complaint and will miss the weekend tournament along with Greg Jeloudev.

However, new signing Michael Wells of National Rugby Championship outfit North Harbour Rays will make his international Sevens debut for Australia after being included in coach Geraint John’s extended 13-strong squad.

Pama Fou and Tom Cusack return to the national squad after missing last season’s Sevens series due to shoulder and knee injuries respectively.

The tournament will mark the first step toward 2016 Rio Olympic qualification.

The top four-ranked teams at the end of the Sevens series automatically qualify for the 12-nation Olympic draw in Rio.

Australia finished fifth last year.

“The 2014-15 Sevens World Series is going to be undoubtedly the toughest season to date,” said John ahead of his first tournament as national Sevens coach.

“With qualification for Rio up for grabs, teams will be more professional and better prepared than ever before.

“We are a long way from qualifying for Rio having finished fifth last season and it is crucial we start well at the weekend.”

Australia are in Pool C with Portugal, Scotland and Fiji.

The top two sides in each group progress to Sunday’s Cup quarterfinals.

Australian Sevens squad (one to be omitted): Paul Asquith, Cameron Clark, Tom Cusack, Con Foley, Pama Fou, Lewis Holland, Ed Jenkins, Tom Lucas, Nick Malouf, Sam Myers, Jesse Parahi, James Stannard, Michael Wells.
