Toomua reminded about record forward pass

As far as unwanted Super Rugby records go, Brumbies five-eighth Matt Toomua’s 21-metre forward pass was a doozy.

One year on, and preparing to play the Western Force again in similarly tense circumstances, the reliable Wallabies’ back admits he’s been lightheartedly reminded of it in the lead-up to Friday’s do-or-die clash in Canberra.

Toomua fielded a missed penalty shot against the Force in the in-goal, then launched it back to a teammate near the 22m line after forgetting to ground the ball.

Unfortunately, the brain snap didn’t go unnoticed by the officials, gifting the Force prime territory while the game was on the line.

The clip has been seen in viral rugby highlight reels around the world, and it’s unlikely the unofficial record will be topped.

While there was little to laugh about at the time – as the Brumbies failed to win and claim a top-two season finish – Toomua says he can see the funny side of it.

“I’ve been reminded about it. I’m going for 30-metres tomorrow. I’m practising out there, might have to swivel like a discus throw – we’ll see,” Toomua jokes.

“I found it quite funny afterwards, because it was quite ridiculous.

“But it was clearly just having my mind a bit too further on, looking for a quick tap or quick kick.”

Toomua’s return from a groin injury he picked up during the Wallabies’ clean sweep of France will be a huge boost to the Brumbies.

The backline suffered without his direction against the NSW Waratahs two weeks ago, and they can ill afford a repeat performance as the loser will likely be denied a spot in the finals.
