Super Rugby cap breach inquiry nears end

Australian Rugby Union boss John O’Neill says he expects his organisation’s investigation into an alleged salary cap breach by one of the local Super Rugby franchises to be finalised in the next couple of weeks.

It has been reported that the un-named franchise rorted the cap by making a player payment via that person’s club and passing it off as a “ground fee”.

Asked on Friday about the progress of the investigation, O’Neill said it was continuing and he expected it to be concluded in the next two weeks.

“We’ve taken these allegations seriously – you have to,” O’Neill said.

“It’s not just about the amounts involved. It’s any breach of the player contracting rules that is not acceptable.

“The integrity system has to be maintained for all five (Australian Super Rugby) teams.”
