Sevens won’t cause carnage to Wallabies

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie insists Australia’s Olympic Sevens campaign won’t cause carnage to his Test team in 2016, despite potentially losing some of his star players.

Australian Rugby Union boss Bill Pulver recently said winning an Olympic geld medal would be his priority in 2016.

Proven game-breaking backs like Israel Folau and Kurtley Beale could be potential targets for an Australian Olympic team.

The Test schedule for 2016 hasn’t been announced yet though the August Olympics fall in what would normally be the middle of the Wallabies’ international season.

“The Sevens teams are smaller teams, I think there might be a dozen players involved. so I don’t think we’ve got to have this mindset that there’s some sort of carnage in the 15-a-side side,” McKenzie said.

“It’s a great opportunity for rugby at the Olympics, so we’ve got to recognise that it’s the biggest event in that year.

“Sure, that doesn’t mean we’re going to down tools on everything else, there’s still the Bledisloe Cup and other things going on.

“2015 is the World Cup for rugby and obviously we’ll put all our efforts into that as well. so there’s no reason as a business we can’t have multiple focuses.”

McKenzie said it was wrong to assume the best Test players would also be the best at Sevens.

He said players rushing from one form to the other risked injury because each required a different from of conditioning and needed time to prepare properly.

McKenzie said he had not spoken to Sharks NRL star Andrew Fifita since the league forward’s deal with the Bulldogs had been scrapped and he had expressed a desire to play rugby union.

He gave no indication he would meet again with Fifita, who he spoke to before Christmas last year.

McKenzie announced on Thursday the Wallabies would embark on a five day Bush2Bledisloe road trip in August, taking the squad through Dubbo, Bathurst, Orange and Penrith.
