Scrum centre of attention for Wallabies

The scrum has become everybody’s business at Wallabies training.

Michael Cheika last week revealed his desire to get his players to “love the scrum” after some fragility was exposed against Wales.

And the new coach took a unique step in the lead up to Saturday’s clash with a powerful French side in Paris in a bid bring a sense of fun and get Australia’s backs involved.

While forwards are often shifted off to another part of the field for scrum work, they were centre of attention as the backs took part in the session by watching closely and cheering their teammates on.

Veteran prop Sekope Kepu said it helped give the backs an appreciation of the art and also created a game-like situation for the forwards.

“It’s been a very good experience for us to know they (the backs) appreciate it more and can have a good close look at it, because they’re never around when we do our scrum sessions,” Kepu told AAP.

“They had to pick a side and stand around and cheer us on. As backs do, they carried on a bit, but for us it was almost a game situation where we had to keep composed throughout our routine.

“At the end of the day, it’s a team sport and it (the scrum) is not only for us, it’s the whole team.”

Cheika said the training tactic was light-hearted but also intended to “balance the importance” of the set-piece.

“It’s all about the end goal to improve,” Cheika said.

“The backs are totally dependant on that part of the game to get clean ball.

“So (we want to) make it a collective thing. If we’re having trouble with the scrum, the backs are feeling it also and we can all get in there get each other motivated.

“I believe our lads have got the talent and have got the commitment to really improve that part of our game and we’re not going to get a bigger test than we are on Saturday.”

Australia conceded a penalty try for a scrum late in the victory over Wales in Cardiff, and Kepu said the focus in training had been getting the small things right.

“Getting that one per cent wrong can be the whole release of the pressure in a scrum,” said Kepu, who will make his 50th Test appearance on Saturday.

“We’ve looked at it very hard (from last week) and marked ourselves on it very hard.”
