O’Connor signs off from French rugby

James O’Connor said au revoir to French rugby from the bench as Toulon suffered a 30-6 loss to Stade Francais in Paris.

O’Connor, who leaves the French champions to link with the Queensland Reds in his bid to play for the Wallabies at the 2015 World Cup, was an unused substitute for Toulon as they were put to the sword on Sunday.

Stade Francais leapfrogged Toulon into first spot in Top 14 with the three tries to none win.

The 24-year-old O’Connor, who was dropped by Australia in September 2013 in the wake of an incident involving staff at Perth airport, has spent six months with Toulon.

O’Connor was granted a one-month extension by Queensland to remain with the European champions to help the club through an injury crisis which includes former Wallabies star Matt Giteau.

The former Western Force and Melbourne Rebels utility back will join the Reds for pre-season training in early January.
