No lazy kicks to Izzy: Springboks coach

Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer has sent his number one kicking general Morne Steyn an urgent memo: no wayward kicks to Israel Folau.

Meyer has parachuted 30-year-old flyhalf Steyn into the starting line up ahead of promising youngster Handre Pollard for Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against the Wallabies in Perth to inject “some calm” into his backline.

The sharpshooting flyhalf is not only renowned for his trusty right boot whilst lining up the posts, but also his ability to chip away territory down the sideline.

And while Meyer said he’s been impressed with how Steyn’s been attacking the gain line of late, he’s urged the Springboks veteran to take extra special care when hoofing the pill down field towards the Wallabies’ number one attacking weapon Folau.

While New Zealand did a sensational job of containing the Wallabies fullback – limiting him to just one try throughout the two Bledisloe Cup Tests – Meyer knows Folau’s best is only ever shanked Gilbert away.

“With Folau at the back, one bad kick and he can punish you,” he said.

“He was just outstanding in Super Rugby, he’s probably one of the most dangerous players from the back – with Willie le Roux.

“If you have one bad kick that’s seven points against you – so (Steyn) has to control his kicking game.”
