Moore named Brumbies captain for 2015

Injured Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore will captain the Brumbies for the 2015 Super Rugby season, head coach Stephen Larkham has confirmed.

Australia’s most accomplished hooker with 92 Test caps, Moore lasted just minutes as Wallabies skipper against France in June before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Moore was chosen to replace France-bound skipper Ben Mowen ahead of former Wallabies skipper David Pocock, 26, who has experienced limited game time over the past two seasons due to consecutive season-ending knee injuries.

If Moore misses the beginning of the Super Rugby season, it’s tipped Pocock will temporarily step into the captaincy role.

Moore has already captained the Brumbies on two occasions – in 2011 against the Stormers in Canberra and in 2012 against the Lions in Johannesburg.

But 2015 will be the first time the 31-year-old will be the appointed captain from the beginning of the season, a long-awaited achievement he says he’s humbled by.

“It will be my seventh year playing and living in Canberra, I’ve made a home here and it’s an honour to be able to represent the region in this way,” Moore said.

“We have a strong, enthusiastic playing group locked in for the 2015 season and I am looking forward to the challenges captaincy will bring.”

Moore was a Wallabies teammate during the twilight years of head coach Larkham’s playing career.

“I’ve been impressed with the way Steve has carried himself on the occasions he has been captain of the Brumbies over the last few years,” Larkham said.

“And I was particularly pleased with the way he led the Wallabies the week leading into that first Test against the French.”
