Melbourne’s traffic woes affect Brumbies

Melbourne’s peak hour traffic woes have claimed another Friday afternoon victim: the Brumbies.

The Super Rugby franchise has decided against conducting their usual captain’s run ahead of Saturday’s clash against the Rebels to avoid crawling through gridlock to and from AAMI Park.

The captain’s run is a training session used by most professional sports teams to give them a feel for conditions at the playing stadium on the eve of the match.

But having lost two of their last four away games against their traditionally less-fancied countrymen, Brumbies captain Stephen Moore says his side has decided to change things up a bit after touching down in Melbourne on Friday afternoon.

“We’ve sort of always gone down there, done it, and haven’t gone as well as we wanted,” Moore said.

“We’ve got a pretty good group now, who will just get down there and get on with the job.”

Moore, who will be making his first start as skipper after fully recovering from knee surgery, was at odds when asked when the Brumbies last skipped a captain’s run.

“There hasn’t been many. We just looked at the schedule and the logistics,” he said.

“By the time you get down there, you sit in traffic, get to the stadium, then back in traffic.

“We got the most out of our preparation yesterday, so today we’ll just use as a day to freshen up.”

He added it was not a routine they intended to undertake for all Australian derbies.

“It’s not anything set in stone, just something we’re looking at this week,” he said.
