Melbourne secure NRC semis berth

Six teams will battle it out for three final spots in the last round of the National Rugby Championship, with Melbourne Rising assured of a home final after keeping their perfect record alive with a win over Greater Sydney.

The Rising were too strong for a defiant Rams outfit, as they cruised to a 58-40 win and in doing so took their win-loss record to 7-0.

Australian under 20s representative Jonah Placid was in stellar form for Melbourne while Jack Debreczeni became the first player to notch 100 points for the tournament after scoring four goals and a try.

The Rams have the bye next week and cannot qualify for the finals.

On Thursday night, Quade Cooper led Brisbane City to a for-and-against boosting 77-26 win over the North Harbour Rays.

Cooper looked the part in his first 80 minute outing for City as he orchestrated a much-needed win following City’s poor showing against the Rams a week prior.

Earlier on Saturday, the NSW Country Eagles reclaimed second position on the competition ladder from Brisbane with a 42-37 win over the University of Canberra Vikings.

The result means the Eagles will control their own destiny when they host the Perth Spirit next Saturday in Dubbo, with a win assuring them a home semi-final.

Should they lose and Brisbane prevail over the Vikings in the curtain raiser to next Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup match at Suncorp Stadium, City will host the second vs third semi.

In Saturday’s other game, Queensland Country recorded their second win of 2014 over the hapless Sydney Stars in Townsville.

The bonus point 53-29 win assures the Stars of the first wooden spoon of the NRC and highlights the gap between the Stars and the remainder of the competition.

Despite leading Country 16-8 at the break, the Sydney outfit capitulated in the second half and were no match for the Country outside backs.

Tries to Sam Grasso, Jack de Guingand, Tom Pincus and James Tuttle guided Country home in the second half.
