Kaino defends Samoan protest support

Long-held grievances within the Samoa rugby team towards their administrators have bubbled to surface says All Blacks veteran Jerome Kaino.

Ten All Blacks, including Kaino, used social media to declare their support for the Samoan players, who this week abandoned a threat to boycott their Test against England on Saturday.

The players haven’t specified the reasons for their displeasure with the Samoa Rugby Union, but hope to get a chance to voice their complaints after the Twickenham Test.

Kaino is close with several of the Samoan players and says the issues that concern them haven’t just emerged on this tour this month.

“It’s been boiling for a while. The group of players they’ve got have been in there for a while and I think they’ve just had enough,” Kaino said.

“They’ve made it known that they’re quite frustrated.

“I’m a proud Samoan. It’s a bunch of brothers showing their support to the brothers in the Samoan team.”

Tough flanker Kaino was among a host of All Blacks players photographed in Cardiff holding a sign saying “#SamoaUnited” which was posted on Twitter.

The others are Sonny Bill Williams, Keven Mealamu, Dan Carter, Liam Messam, Julian Savea, Brodie Retallick, Charlie Faumuina, Patrick Tuipulotu and Augustine Pulu.

Kaino was pleased it generated interest and the hopes the issues raised will be addressed.

“It’s really important. They’ve got a lot of talent and potential in their team and if they can get all the bases covered, then I’m sure that would flow on to their performances on the field,” he said.

“If they’re happy, then we’ll be happy.”

Kaino says the New Zealand players didn’t feel the need to clear their Twitter posting with NZ Rugby or All Blacks management.

NZ Rugby chief executive Steve Tew reportedly said he has no problem with his players’ voicing their opinions, as long as it is clear they are doing so as individuals, not as All Blacks.

None of the 10 players in the photograph are wearing team clothing.
