Hansen set to extend All Blacks contract

New Zealand Rugby is expected to announce an extension to All Blacks coach Steve Hansen’s contract at a media conference in Wellington on Tuesday.

New Zealand Rugby says a “special announcement” will be made this afternoon, with Hansen in attendance alongside NZR chief executive Steve Tew and chairman Brent Impey.

Tew last month expressed a desire to retain Hansen in the role beyond next year’s World Cup, when his current two-year contract expires.

It would be a first, with no previous New Zealand coach having been given such security ahead of the four-yearly tournament.

The 55-year-old has forged a remarkable record since succeeding Graham Henry as head coach in the wake of their 2011 World Cup triumph.

The All Blacks have lost just twice in 42 Tests, drawing two and winning the other 38.

Hansen has been named world coach of the year for the last three seasons.

Following their season-ending win over Wales in Cardiff on November 22, he confirmed he had been in discussions with Tew and told AAP he wanted his future clarified as soon as possible.

“If it’s to happen, it’s got to be right for the team and got to be right for the family,” he said.

“We’ll get the tour out of the way, get home and we’ll sit down and talk to everybody.

“It’s going to be done (soon) if it’s going to happen.”

Hansen was Welsh national coach before serving as assistant to Henry for eight years.

He signed an initial two-year contract as head coach and doubled that tenure in a contract signed in 2013.
