Canes lose Woodward for Super Rugby season

Hurricanes fullback Jason Woodward has broken his ankle and will miss the rest of the Super Rugby season.

Woodward, who has struggled for game time with the league-leading Hurricanes, suffered the injury in a club rugby game on Saturday.

It ends a disappointing campaign for the 24-year-old, who returned to Wellington with a stated aim to pursue higher honours after two impressive seasons with the Melbourne Rebels.

He started the first two games, in South Africa, but then lost the fullback berth to exciting attacker Nehe Milner-Skudder.

His only other appearance was against the Rebels in round seven.

The Hurricanes have called 19-year-old Sam McNicol into the squad as cover.
