Winning next week’s Super Rugby grand final rematch against the Chiefs will be a small step towards solace for Brumbies halfback Nic White, who says last year’s defeat cut him deep for six long months.

It took two Chiefs tries and a penalty goal in the final 17 minutes to pip the Brumbies 27-22 and claim the silverware in Hamilton.

White said letting the title slip in that fashion made it hurt so much more.

“We owe them one. Revenge might be the right word; or not,” he said when asked about next Friday’s Anzac Day clash at Canberra Stadium.

“But it’s definitely something that burnt blokes for six months.

“It won’t bring back a feeling of winning a grand final, but it’s a small step.”

The Brumbies, who have a much-needed bye this weekend, could receive reinforcements for the match.

Backrow enforcer Fotu Auelua, locks Sam Carter and Leon Power, and Fijian-flyer Henry Speight are all a chance of returning from injuries.

And while there are five key Chiefs players from last year’s final that have left the club – including former captain Craig Clarke – there’s been no shortage of talent who have stepped up in their place.

The Chiefs are third overall on the ladder, just one point behind the Brumbies, with an extra game up their sleeve.

“They’ve got incredible depth. Every time a player steps in, you may not have heard of him before, but he’s a name you don’t forget,” White said.

White also called on SANZAR and the ARU to make the Anzac Day clash between the Brumbies and a New Zealand team in Canberra a permanent fixture on the rugby calendar.

“I’m sure it couldn’t be too hard. We’ve got to play two Kiwi sides each year at home, so why not?” he said.
