Brumbies not out to prove point to Cheik

Brumbies prop Ben Alexander says no one in his side will be going out to prove a point to Wallabies coach Michael Cheika when they take on the Waratahs this weekend.

Australia’s two best Super Rugby sides will meet at Allianz Stadium on Sunday for a high-stakes clash that will prove crucial when competition points are totalled come finals.

And with the Rugby World Cup exactly six months away to the day, it will also give Cheika a good look at the bulk of the players who will make up his World Cup squad.

While most of the hype surrounding the game has featured on the long-awaited battle between premier No.7s David Pocock and Michael Hooper, it’s sorting out the pecking order of Australia’s front-rowers that is more vital to the Wallabies’ campaign.

With both the Brumbies and Waratahs boasting an all-Wallabies front row, the battle at the scrum is set to be particularly fierce.

Alexander, Stephen Moore and Scott Sio will be pitted against Sekope Kepu, Tatafu Polota-Nau and Benn Robinson.

But Alexander – Australia’s most capped prop – insists his side is more focused on the win than catching the eye of Cheika – who doubles as Waratahs and Wallabies coach.

“It will be a big battle. But we’re just worried about winning,” Alexander said.

“No one is going out to prove a point to Cheik. What Cheik thinks will take care of itself.”

Alexander added that beating the Waratahs in Sydney was as “tough as it gets”.

“It’s right up there, well and truly,” he said.

“Playing the reigning champs is always a good test to see where you’re at. Especially in their backyard.

“We’re tracking well, but this is a humongous test.”
