Young Titan plotting Broncos NRL demise

As a kid Kane Elgey dreamed of one day playing for favourite team Brisbane and emulating his hero Darren Lockyer.

On Friday, Elgey will face up to his boyhood club in just his second NRL appearance as Gold Coast host the Broncos in a south-east Queensland derby.

A Tugun junior, Elgey grew up as a Broncos fan in the days before the Titans entered the NRL.

But he insists his loyalties are firmly with the Titans as he aims to back up his winning debut against Cronulla last weekend with another victory.

“Growing up I always wanted to play the Broncos or play for them, so that dream’s here,” he said.

“I was with the Titans when I was 15 so I’ve been here for a while. It’s every kid’s dream to play on a Friday night … hopefully I get selected and I’ll be overwhelmed if I get the chance.”

Elgey had a hand in one of the Titans’ three tries on their way to a 24-22 win over the Sharks, with a speculative kick allowing centre James Roberts to score.

But the 21-year-old admits he held back a bit as he got used to life in first grade, particularly with a physical Sharks pack targeting him.

“I’ll definitely be a bit more confident (against the Broncos),” he said.

“I was holding back a bit and trying to get into the game but I know what to expect now.

“The boys believe in me so I guess I’ve just got to believe in myself.

“I’m not going to lie … the speed of the game was just enormous. Them coming down my side made it a bit worse.

“I sort of know what to expect now. Going into that first game I wasn’t sure what to expect so that will build my confidence and I’m excited.”
