Wests Tigers vs Manly Sea Eagles 2014 NRL Round 5 preview, tips and teams

The Tigers have started outsiders in each of their four matches so far this year and will be so again the Sea Eagles at Leichhardt Oval this Sunday.

Despite not being wanted by punters, the Tigers have posted two impressive wins in the opening four rounds, comprehensively defeating the Titans (42 – 12) in round 2 and backing that up with a 25 – 16 win over South Sydney the following week.

They couldn’t keep the ball rolling last week though when travelling to New Zealand to take on the Warriros, and finished on the wrong side of a 42 – 18 scoreline.

The Tigers started well, scoring the first two tries of the match but three tries to the Warriors in the final ten minutes of the first half, saw their advantage wiped away.

The Warriors maintained the momentum early in the second half, scoring quickly twice, and with the Tigers suffering injuries to Patterson, Tedesco and Sauaso, they struggled with limited personal late in the game.

Three more tries in the final ten minutes of the match to the Warriors, inflated the score that viewed alone, would be quite misleading.

It continued the Tigers involvement in high-scoring games, with the average total match score of their four games this year being 55.75 points.

The Sea Eagles were involved in a real arm-wrestle with the Roosters last week, prevailing 8 – 0 at the end of a tough 80 minutes. Ironically though, it was there biggest winning margin of the year.

After losing in Golden Point to the Storm h in the opening round, the Sea Eagles have now strung three wins together and they head into this match with largely an unchanged line-up, with Chris King’s return from suspension with Glenn Stewart in some doubt after suffering concussion last week, the only alteration to last week’s team.

Worth noting that between them Steve Matai and Cheyse Blair, the left-hand side pairing of Manly’s attack, have scored seven of their side’s eleven tries this year.

The Tigers have won three of the last five games against Manly played at this ground but the latest of those matches was way back in 2007.

Playing at Leichhardt does bring out the best in the Tigers but have Manly have proven this year, they are a tough nut to crack and should hold again here.
