Warriors’ Tomkins faces wait over injury

Fullback Sam Tomkins admits he’s as much in the dark as anyone over the seriousness of the knee injury that forced him off in the Warriors’ 29-16 NRL win over Parramatta in Auckland.

The England Test star left the field during the second half on Saturday with the home side ahead 28-0.

His departure led to a Warriors backline reshuffle and three quick tries to the Eels.

Tomkins will have a scan over the next two days to determine the nature and extent of the injury, which happened as he was tackled.

“I got up, played the ball, and then it just didn’t feel quite right,” he said.

Tomkins came away from the match feeling soreness in the knee.

He said the team physio checked him out and couldn’t see anything too serious, but there would be no conclusions until the tests were done.

Having been an ever-present for the Warriors last year in his first NRL season after moving from English giants Wigan, it’s the second tome Tomkins has been hit by injury in 2015.

A hamstring problem meant he missed the opening round loss to Newcastle, but he returned in week two and produced a lively performance in the win over Canberra.

While the victory over Parramatta ended up being clear cut, it was third time in first three rounds that the Warriors have mixed a good half with a not-so-good one.

Tomkins believes the difference between the two spells against the Eels was the defensive effort, which he described as ruthless in the opening period.

“We were pretty good for the first 40 minutes, but we’ve got a lot to work on,” he said.

“It’s only round three. We’re not firing on all cylinders yet.”

Still, the opening half, especially the first quarter when they ran in four tries, did offer a template for the Warriors.

“It felt good, the passes were sticking and the defence was pretty brutal at times, which is what we need,” he said.

The Auckland-based club face Brisbane next weekend in a rematch of the Warriors’ debut in the NRL 20 years ago.
