Warriors reveal no-name NRL trial squad

Only two members of the Warriors’ ill-fated Auckland Nines squad have been included in a no name squad for Saturday night’s NRL trial against the Gold Coast in Toowoomba.

Just six players with NRL experience feature in Warriors coach Andrew McFadden’s 23-strong squad.

Ex-Raider Matt Allwood and utility Nathaniel Roache are the only players backing up from the Nines where hot favourites the Warriors crashed out in the quarter-finals at Eden Park.

Allwood scored against his old club Canberra in Auckland but 18-year-old Roache wasn’t used in any of the side’s four Nines games.

Besides Allwood, others with first grade experience are Dominique Peyroux, ex-Eels utility Api Pewhairangi, props Charlie Gubb and Upu Poching and John Palavi.

The squad includes seven members of the Junior Warriors’ 2014 NYC premiership-winning squad and regulars in the club’s NSW Cup side.

“After needing to consider the Nines as well, we can now concentrate solely on our preparation for the season proper,” said McFadden.

“This first trial is really important in terms of looking at options, testing our depth and finding out what players have to offer whether it be for the NRL or NSW Cup sides.

“It’s also a valuable opportunity for some of our younger players to have a taste of NRL trial football.”

The squad flies to Australia on Friday.

Warriors trial squad: Matthew Allwood, James Bell, Sam Cook, Ray Faitala-Mariner, Charlie Gubb, Ata Hingano, Viliami Kaveinga, Stedman Lefau, Matiu Love-Henry, Marata Niukore, John Palavi, Willie Peace, Nathaniel Peteru, Api Pewhairangi, Dominque Peyroux, Upu Poching, Nathaniel Roache, Toafofoa Sipley, Saula Solomona, Zac Tippens, Jarrod Tua, Paul Ulberg, Albert Vete.
