Wakefield win in Super League

Jacob Miller and Chris Riley have both scored hat-tricks as Wakefield made it two Super League wins in as many games with a 44-24 victory over Hull KR on Sunday.

Miller struck twice in the first half as the Wildcats led 16-12 at half-time, Matty Ashurt also getting in on the act to cancel out visiting tries for Australian Albert Kelly and Tyrone McCarthy.

After Danny Kirmond stretched the host’s lead wing Ken Sio crossed for Hull KR, only for Riley to then take centre stage for Wakefield as he grabbed a 12-minute hat-trick.

Hull KR did score again as Ryan Bailey touched down, but Miller had the last laugh as he wrapped up his treble with a minute remaining.

On Saturday, Australian Scott Dureau announced himself back to Super League action in style as his last-gasp drop-goal saw Catalans Dragons squeeze past Castleford Tigers 13-12 in Perpignan.

The 28-year-old half-back was making his first appearance in the Super League for nearly a year following a succession of injuries and spending last season on loan with Sydney Roosters.

And he was clearly eager to make up for lost time as his late heroics handed the Dragons a first win of the season off the back of tries for Morgan Escare and Elliott Whitehead.

As for Castleford, despite tries for former Sydney Roosters pair Justin Carney and Jordan Tansey, they are also waiting for their first points this term.

Friday saw Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos make it two wins from as many games as they beat Hull FC and Widnes respectively.

Daryl Clark’s try and the boot of Gareth O’Brien had Wolves leading Hull FC 7-0 at half-time, and despite a second-half rally from the hosts that saw Tom Lineham dot down, the visitors held on.

It was a much more comfortable night for Leeds as Adam Cuthbertson grabbed one of seven tries in a 38-6 rout of Widnes to mark his home debut in style.

The Rhinos and Widnes were locked at 6-6 at half-time at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium as Zak Hardaker’s try for the hosts was cancelled out by Manase Manuokafoa.

But after the interval it was all Leeds as Ryan Hall, Cuthbertson, Tom Briscoe, Danny Maguire, Kallum Watkins and Kevin Sinfield all crossed – the latter also kicking four second-half conversions.

Wigan twice come from behind to see off Huddersfield 24-16 to collect their first Super League win of the season.

Huddersfield were on course for a fourth successive regular-season victory at the DW Stadium when they led 16-10 at half-time thanks to tries from Anthony Mullaly, Jamie Ellis and Aaron Murphy.

But Wigan roared back with three second-half tries, with prop Ryan Sutton clinching the win with his first try for the club seven minutes from the end to add to a double for Sam Tomkins and a score apiece for John Bateman and Michael McIlorum.

Reigning champions St Helens warmed up for their World Club Challenge clash with South Sydney with a 52-6 demolition of Salford to continue their impressive start to the Super League season.
