Unchanged Warriors team to face Penrith

The Warriors have named an unchanged starting team for what could be their last game of the NRL season against Penrith in Sydney on Sunday.

Victory over the fourth-placed Panthers will guarantee the ninth-placed Warriors a play-off spot while defeat will almost certainly result in missing the post-season for a third successive year.

In the latter scenario, they would need Brisbane to lose to Melbourne by a decent margin and for Parramatta to go down to Canberra in the earlier weekend matches.

Coach Andrew McFadden wants to avoid relying on the calculator, calling on his side to match the intensity and execution which marked their 42-0 drubbing of Gold Coast Titans last weekend.

The only possible change is on an extended interchange bench, where experienced forward Feleti Mateo is among five players named after an outing for the NSW Cup side which impressed McFadden.

“He really made a statement there, and that’s what he needed to do,” McFadden said.

“He went back, he took it in the right way and he performed. So he’s certainly someone we can use on the weekend.”

Five players are poised to finish the regular season having played all 24 regular season games – captain Simon Mannering, fullback Sam Tomkins, hooker Nathan Friend and props Jacob Lillyman and Suaia Matagi.

WARRIORS: Sam Tomkins, Ngani Laumape, Konrad Hurrell, Dominique Peyroux, Manu Vatuvei, Thomas Leuluai, Shaun Johnson, Jacob Lillyman, Nathan Friend, Ben Matulino, Ben Henry, Simon Mannering (capt), Sione Lousi. Interchange (from): Sam Rapira, Suaia Matagi, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Jayson Bukuya, Feleti Mateo.
