Two more charged in sport drug scandal

The drug scandal involving several Queensland sportsmen has deepened with two more men facing charges.

The Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission has announced a 33-year-old Gold Coast man and a 28-year-old based overseas have been served with notices to appear in court.

It’s believed the pair are sportsmen.

The 33-year-old man from Palm Beach will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on March 9 to face two counts of supplying cocaine.

In a statement, the CCC confirmed the arrests were linked to the ongoing investigation into a cocaine trafficking syndicate which has already resulted in five Gold Coast Titans NRL players and Queensland Reds star Karmichael Hunt being served with notices to appear.

Hunt will appear in court on March 5 along with Titans Beau Falloon and Jamie Dowling and an unnamed 22-year-old woman.

The 33-year-old man’s March 9 court date is the same as Titans stars Greg Bird and Dave Taylor as well as Kalifa Faifai Loa and former player Joe Vickery.

The CCC has also obtained an arrest warrant for the 28-year-old man, which is expected to executed upon his return to Australia.

His warrant relates to 10 counts of supplying a dangerous drug.

The CCC said in a statement that Friday’s announcement will be the last in relation to this investigation.

“The CCC understands a number of organisations and individuals have been the subject of speculation that they are possible targets of this ongoing CCC investigation,” the statement said.

“The CCC has decided it is in the public interest to confirm that based on evidence currently available to the CCC, it does not expect to make any further arrests of current or former sportspeople as a result of its ongoing investigation into the cocaine trafficking syndicate.”
