Troubled Roberts signed by Panthers

Troubled youngster James Roberts has found a new home at Penrith for the next two NRL seasons.

A South Sydney junior, Roberts had been touted as a player with a big future but was sacked by the Rabbitohs last month after repeated off field indiscretions.

Panthers general manager Phil Gould welcomed the acquisition of the speedy outside back, who is the nephew of former NRL player Amos Roberts.

“James is obviously an elite footballing talent, who has faced some challenges in his personal life,” Gould said in a statement.

“We look forward to working with James to help him build the kind of career his talent deserves.”

Roberts, 19, played 10 first grade games for the Rabbitohs.

Penrith on Friday also announced the signing of back-rower Matt Robinson for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Robinson, 22, made his NRL debut for the Panthers in round eight this season and has played eight matches for the club.
