Trouble for England’s Farrell: Sheens

Australian coach Tim Sheens says England second-rower Liam Farrell should be charged by the Four Nations match review committee for his “ugly” chicken-wing tackle on Greg Inglis.

Farrell got a hold of the Kangaroos fullback as he took the ball out of the dead-ball zone five minutes into their Four Nations match at AAMI Park.

While a prone Inglis clutched at his shoulder Farrell was put on report by referee Gerard Sutton.

Inglis played on as Australia triumphed 16-12 but Sheens said at the post-match press conference his player was in pain.

When asked should Farrell be in trouble Sheens responded: “For sure”.

“That’s an ugly tackle and Inglis is still not well with it so whether it’s an accident or not it’s an ugly tackle.”

He thought that Inglis should be fine to play Samoa in Wollongong next Sunday.

“I think he’ll be very sore but we’ve got a week,” Sheens said.

Farrell was the first of three players put on report in the space of five minutes.

England captain Sean O’Loughlin was reported for tripping Australian skipper Cameron Smith and then Kangaroo Greg Bird found himself in trouble after an awkward tackle when O’Loughlin somersaulted over him.

“I was disappointed the one that went on report when the English player dived over the top of Bird,” Sheens said.

“I’m getting too old for this game with the referee putting that on report.”

England coach Steve McNamara didn’t think Farrell would be charged by the match review committee.

“Not after there were no cases to answer last week,” McNamara said.
