Triguboff won’t bail Balmain out

Billionaire former sponsor Harry Triguboff has ruled out buying Balmain’s share in the Wests Tigers.

The Balmain side of the merger has just two weeks to cough up the $5.4 million they borrowed from the NRL, or risk losing complete control of the club to Western Suburbs.

Balmain are reportedly desperate for Triguboff to buy their share of the club, but the long-time sponsor through Meriton Apartments says it won’t be happening.

“I’m not interested,” he said.

“What can I do? I have been there for many years. That has nothing to do with me. People drift apart.”

Instead, Triguboff says he would rather contribute towards bringing players to the club, but says he won’t be doing so unless there are Balmain members on the Wests Tigers board.

That is unlikely to happen though, given the Balmain club is $11 million in debt as a result of their closed leagues club in Rozelle.

Meanwhile, Wests Ashfield, who also purchased Wests Campbelltown’s shares in the club three years ago, say the Tigers logo won’t change.
