Tom Burgess injury doubt for England

Giant England prop George Burgess is feeling right at home in chilly and wet Dunedin, preparing for their do-or-die rugby league Test on Saturday night against New Zealand.

But he might have to forgo some family support in keeping England’s Four Nations final hopes alive, after England being denied a last-minute match-winning try by the video referee in Sunday’s 16-12 loss to Australia.

Brother Tom, who is on the interchange bench, rolled an ankle at training in Dunedin on Wednesday and sat out the session. A decision on his fitness will be made nearer game time.

George Burgess, 22, who weighs in at 120kg, was one of the South Sydney’s grand final stars, scoring a spectacular try against Canterbury.

He says he has no problems coming off the high of winning the NRL premiership.

“It’s been good. This is a different environment and it’s good being around old friends,” he told reporters.

“And Dunedin looks a bit like the north of England, where I’m from, so I’m enjoying it.”

He said Saturday night’s Test in the covered Forsyth Barr Stadium was an “all or nothing game” for England.

“But it won’t change our approach to the game,” he said.

“The Kiwis are big and strong, and like to offload, so we’ll have to be good on defence. They got one over us in the World Cup semi-final last year and it would be good to get revenge but it’s not the main thing we’re focusing on.

“We’ve had to get over the disappointment of the loss to Australia quickly, but we’ve looked at the game and seen some of the things we’ve done well. We’ll try to carry those forward to Saturday night and correct the errors we made in Melbourne.”

Burgess was outwardly philosophical about the TV match official ruling out England’s try.

“It could just as easily been awarded a try but that’s the game. You win and lose games on the bounce of a ball and, sometimes, one decision can win or lose a game,” he said.

“You’ve just got to roll with it. Every team goes through it and we have to move on.”
