Titans veteran revels in farewell win

Gold Coast veteran Mark Minichiello only has one regret from his 173rd and final NRL appearance for the Titans.

The 32-year-old admits he has never kicked a goal in his life but felt he should have been the man to attempt a potentially match-winning shot in Sunday’s dramatic 19-18 golden point win over Canterbury.

Brad Takairangi’s try with two minutes remaining had just levelled scores at 18-all but with regular kicker Aidan Sezer off the field, it was Daniel Mortimer who stepped up to take the conversion.

Minichiello, captaining the Titans in his final game before joining English Super League team Hull FC on a two-year deal, admits to a tinge of regret as Mortimer’s shot struck the post.

“I went up to him and said I should take it, he was going to give it to me but I thought he would put it over and then he hit the post,” Minichiello said.

“I’ve never kicked a goal in my life but I would’ve kicked that one.”

Fortunately for the Titans, Minichiello’s long-time roommate Will Zillman’s 22m field goal in golden-point extra-time sealed the win and a perfect send-off for the club’s record games holder.

Minichiello, who scored his fourth try of the season in the second-half fightback, said the victory was a fitting tribute to himself as well as retired Titans pair Luke Bailey and Ashley Harrison.

“I mentioned that before the game to the team, that we were playing for Bails and Harro and all the departing players who weren’t on the field,” he said.

“Very proud of the boys tonight, they dug really deep to give us departing boys a victory.

“Something I’ll always remember.”
