Titans need a win, not players: Zillman

Having the five players facing drug charges back in the squad would be a boost to Gold Coast, but Titans fullback Will Zillman says what the NRL club needs most of all is a victory.

The Titans arrived back home on Sunday in a state of shock following a 40-0 hiding by Penrith in Bathurst the day before.

It means the embattled club is bottom of the competition after their opening two matches, with the flogging coming a week after their heartbreaking one-point loss to Wests Tigers.

It’s anticipated State of Origin stars Greg Bird and Dave Taylor as well as Beau Falloon, Kalifa Faifai Loa and Jamie Dowling will be available for selection for next weekend’s home clash with Newcastle.

The five have been stood down since it emerged in February they were facing charges of supply and possession of cocaine.

The Titans are awaiting advice from Sydney-based QC Tony Bannon about what action to take with the players before deciding whether to restore them to first-team duties.

Coach Neil Henry has already expressed his hope the players will be back with the squad in the build-up to the Knights game, but vice-captain Zillman said all he was worried about was getting the first win of the season.

“We still don’t know what’s going on and that’s not at all for me really to comment on,” Zillman told AAP when asked about the possible return of players.

“Whatever happens this week we just need to make sure we turn up on Sunday because it’s really important for us now to get two points and put on a good show for the home crowd again.”

Zillman remains confident the squad is more than capable of competing with or without the suspended five.

“We’ve got more depth this year than I think we have had in previous years,” he said.

“That’s a very positive thing. We’ve got a lot of competition for positions right across the park and it’s always a good thing, but at the same time we need to put the performances on the field for that to mean anything.”

Zillman has also emphasised his desire to hold on to the club’s No.1 jersey, despite a growing belief that recruit Josh Hoffman would be more effective at fullback than in his position in the centres.

“That’s for Neil to decide what he thinks is best for the team,” Zillman said.

“Look, I want to play fullback but, again, it’s about whatever’s required for the team.”
