Veteran Sydney midfielder Ryan O’Keefe says he can play for a few more years yet and could join the Swans’ growing list of AFL triple centurions.

The 31-year-old club stalwart notches his 250th AFL appearance on Sunday, when the ladder-leading Swans play Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Renowned for his work ethic and stamina, O’Keefe shows no signs of slowing down and remains an integral part of Sydney’s impressive on-ball rotation.

He averages 24 touches a game this season and has racked up two tallies of 36 and another of 39 in Sydney’s past five games.

Michael O’Loughlin and Adam Goodes are the only players to have made 300 appearances for Sydney, Jude Bolton is four games away and O’Keefe would need to play on for at least two more seasons to notch his personal triple century.

“As long as my body is still fine and I’m still enjoying what I’m doing, you turn up to work and you love what you’re doing, it sort of flies by and you can clock them up,” O’Keefe said before training on Wednesday.

“But it (300 games) is a fair way down the track now, so I’ll just worry about this year and keep enjoying my footy.”

Asked if he had a gut feeling about how long he would play on for, O’Keefe – who is contracted through next season – said: “I don’t know. I think I’ve got a few years left in me.

“The body is feeling as good as it did in my mid-twenties so I haven’t even thought about (retiring).”

O’Keefe seems set to to finish his AFL career as a one-club man, though at one stage he looked set to leave the Swans.

He asked for a trade following the 2008 season, but no deal was done.

“I don’t really think about it too much now – it was a fair while ago,” O’Keefe said.

“I’m really enjoying my footy, it’s a great list and a great bunch of guys to play with.”

O’Keefe has played some of his best football over the past four seasons since successfully switching from half forward flank to the midfield.

“A few years ago, I needed a freshen-up change, a new challenge and asked if I could have a more permanent role in the midfield and it’s worked out well for both parties, I think,” O’Keefe said.
