Super League Salford sign Corey Paterson

Salford have signed Australian forward Cory Paterson, who previously played in the English Super League with Hull KR in 2013.

The 27-year-old former Newcastle Knights and North Queensland second rower, who was released at his own request halfway through his two-year contract with the Robins, has signed a 12-month deal at Salford with the option of a second season at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Paterson joined Wests Tigers following his return to Australia but quit the Sydney club at the end of the 2014 season to pursue a career in professional boxing and last month won his second fight with a first-round technical knockout.

“It became apparent this week that Cory wanted not only to get back into rugby league but also that he really wanted to do so with us,” Salford owner Marwan Koukash said.

“The deal has moved very quickly and Cory will join us in January on a one-year deal with an option of a second. It is a great opportunity for both parties.

“Cory will come in and make our pack even stronger and for him it allows him the opportunity to continue to prove himself at the highest level.”
