Storm says left-hand edge a weapon

Melbourne Storm say they now have a genuine two-pronged attack to trouble their NRL rivals.

The Storm’s new left-hand side combination was key to their clinical 36-18 win over the Sharks last round, with halfback recruit Blake Green calling the shots on that side of the field.

Strapping second-rower Tohu Harris scored two tries while winger Marika Koribete also crossed in their six-try haul.

“It was really good to see those guys on our left hand side all play as well as they did,” said coach Craig Bellamy.

“Blake Green is getting better and better each week.

“His individual efforts have been great but he’s getting better at working with Cooper (Cronk) and Smithy (Cameron Smith) and Bill (Slater) and deciding when it’s his time to have the ball and when to sit back and he really led that left-hand side really well.”

NZ Test representative Harris was the stand-out, settling into the vacancy left by Ryan Hoffman’s departure to the Warriors.

Bellamy said Harris had always had the ability but was relishing a more specific role this season.

The coach said that Harris had worked hard in the off-season on adding more speed to his game.

“He’s got good footwork, skills and a big motor and we’re expecting a big year and he started off on the right note,” Bellamy said.

“In the past he’s been thrown around a bit, through the middle and edges, but now he’s got a spot where he plays more specifically for more time.

“His combination with Greeny is a real strength of ours.”

Storm centre Will Chambers said his side would need to deliver another 80 minute performance against the Cowboys next Monday night, despite their opposition’s winless start to the season.

“They’re a very talented side with Johnathan Thurston, Matt Scott and James Tamou and we can’t take them lightly,” Chambers said.

“We know going up there will be a big effort and they will have their backs against the wall and will be firing.”
