Souths motivated to atone for heartbreak

Long-suffering South Sydney fans are daring to dream and superstar Greg Inglis says he and his teammates are beginning to believe that 2014 can be their year.

Following their 23-4 win over ladder leaders Manly on Friday night, the Rabbitohs have been installed as title favourites by the bookmakers.

The club has gone 43 years without a premiership and the myrtle and cardinal red faithful will be wary after having their expectations lifted and then squashed the last two years.

After being touted as title fancies, Michael Maguire’s men were knocked out one win shy of the grand final the last two seasons.

Inglis said the heartbreak of the last two campaigns is fuelling the second-placed Rabbitohs title ambitions.

“I think the boys this year have that confidence and belief,” he said.

“They were there last year and got beaten and that hurt them.

“And I think that gives them extra motivation.”

Following four straight wins, the Rabbitohs are arguably the form team of the competition four weeks out from the finals and appear well poised to make a run at the title.

While their chances have in part been cruelled by injuries the last two seasons, this year they have almost a full compliment of troops.

Captain and five-eighth John Sutton (knee) is the exception but is expected back in two to three weeks with youngster Luke Keary filling his shoes with aplomb.

The Rabbitohs will have a chance to enhance their premiership credentials and put a nail in the coffin of 10th-placed Brisbane’s top eight hopes when they meet at ANZ Stadium on Thursday.

Hooker Issac Luke, who was part of Souths’ last two semi-final exits, says he’s driven by the pain of those defeats.

“I’ve been at the club for a pretty lengthy period now,” he said.

“And to go that far and get cut short and then to go that far again and get cut short, it’s a big motivation for myself.

“I’m sure the boys have taken on the same motivation too and use it to prepare themselves every week.”
