Souths fans on a grand final high

Christmas has come early for South Sydney fans.

Decked in green and red, supporters have been celebrating through the night their first NRL premiership in 43 years.

In Sydney’s Redfern, the heartland of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, tired but joyous fans have been lining up since early hours of Monday to congratulate their NRL heroes.

They spent the night dancing and singing in the street, horns blaring and flags waving.

“It feels like Christmas,” die-hard fan Nick Richard, 39, cheered.

“Everyone is happy, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Mr Richard wasn’t born the last time Souths won a grand final.

But for Paul O’Shea, 58, the memory was clear, however distant.

He has been there for every tackle, try and penalty since.

“It’s like one of your children, you got it forever,” he told AAP.

“To go without winning a grand final for so long … We just want one before we die.

“They delivered for us last night.

“I cried.”

His daughter Megan Waring, 21, joined in the tears of joy, especially when Sam Burgess broke down.

“[I’m going to] wear Souths clothes for a very long time,” she said.

The preschool teacher, who works in Roosters territory in Kingsford, plans to make sure her students’ parents follow through on their bets.

“The little girls have to sing ‘Glory, Glory’ at home,” she said.

“And they gotta wear red and green to school.”

Alan Pietrzak, 25, travelled from Perth with his friend, a Bulldogs supporter, to see his team to victory.

It was a big effort for a fan who only pledged his allegiance at the start of the year.

“This is where the real rivalry will begin now that I’m part of a premiership winning team,” he said.

“My friend was very gracious about it, he’s a bit down.”

But for Souths supporters, the party has just begun.
