Sims, Watmough face NRL finals bans

North Queensland forward Tariq Sims’ NRL career could be over after being hit with a grade three shoulder charge by the judiciary – a sanction that carries at least a five-match ban.

Manly’s Anthony Watmough was another potential loser on the match review panel’s charge sheet, being hit with a grade one dangerous throw which could rule him out of the Sea Eagles’ semi-final clash with Canterbury.

Sydney Roosters forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves escaped charge over a high tackle on Brent Kite in the premiers’ loss to Penrith.

The Kiwi prop will be free to play in Friday’s match against the Cowboys.

Bulldogs Josh Morris and David Klemmer also avoided sanctions after being put on report.

Sims has signed with Super League’s Warrington for next season.

Sims was hit with the sanction for a 59th minute tackle on Brisbane utility Justin Hodges in the Cowboys’ elimination final win in Townsville on Saturday night.

If Sims takes the early plea he will miss five games, and if he fights the charge and loses he faces a seven game ban.

It is likely the Cowboys will challenge the charge at the judiciary this week, to at least seek a downgrade, to allow the 24-year-old the chance to play again this season, with three weeks of finals remaining.

Watmough faces sanction over a 32nd minute tackle, that also involved Jamie Lyon, on Greg Inglis in the first half of Manly’s qualifying final thrashing at the hands of South Sydney on Friday.

Lyon was also hit with a grade one dangerous throw, but will miss suspension with an early plea.

However Watmough faces a week on the sidelines due to loading from previous offences.

Brisbane’s Ben Barba will be free to play the opening game of the 2015 season if he takes the early plea on a grade one dangerous contact – unnecessary leg pressure charge emanating from a tackle late in the game on Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt.
